Alex pays tribute to the rich iconography of traditional Balinese art in “Elixir of Immortality” (Amrita), an 80 x 60 cm acrylic painting depicting the Balinese creation myth, known as “Samudra Manthan,”. This is a captivating tale from Hindu mythology, transcending geographical boundaries to become an essential part of Indian and Southeast Asian cultures. In this myth, gods and demons collaborate to “churn the sea of milk” in search of the elixir of immortality, leading to the emergence of divine and mundane elements. After much effort, the gods secure the Amrita with the clever intervention of Lord Vishnu as Mohini, the enchantress. The Balinese people celebrate this myth through rituals, dance, and art, recognising its spiritual and philosophical significance in portraying the cosmic struggle between good and evil and the cyclical nature of creation and destruction.
To display this original Florschutz is to exalt Elixir of Immortality as an icon of perseverance, vitality and the triumph of wisdom. Allow the radiance of the goddess to illuminate your path with fortitude and grace. For the global art lover, this work signifies humanity’s common need for legends that ignite our sense of wonder and endless possibility and for struggle between good and evil and the cyclical nature of creation and destruction. May Alex’s cross-cultural vision inspire unity through awe.
