About Me

alex magic (2)

Welcome to my virtual home, a place where the different threads of my creative life come together through painting, writing, healing and enquiry.

Alchemy of the Soul explores the relationship between the visible world and our inner lives.

At the centre of almost every painting is a source of light, breaking through darkness, rising from water, blossoming from a flower, the womb or the heart. Through vibrant colour, deep blues, layered textures and expressive forms, I am drawn to the possibility of transformation: how light, warmth and love might soften what has hardened. This is the quiet alchemy by which beauty awakens something within us.

Drawing upon a lifetime of artistic practice, spiritual enquiry and an enduring fascination with the human experience, I approach painting as both a meditation and an act of love, born of freedom.

The feminine, birth, sexuality, nature and creativity have long been part of my artistic journey. These recurring forms reflect my fascination with the forces that bring life into being and our own capacity for renewal. They emerge, dissolve and reappear, inviting the imagination to take part in what is seen.

This exhibition began with a single image: a lotus made of fire, rising out of darkness. I created it with the help of AI while searching for the shape of this work, and it has stayed with me ever since as a guide and a reminder to keep going. It appears here as the seed from which the paintings grew.

Several works are also shown printed on translucent chiffon, suspended in the space, so that light can pass through them and you can move among them.

Rather than presenting fixed meanings or narratives, my paintings make space for contemplation. They invite us to engage not only through observation and intellect, but through feeling and intuition, to think with the heart.

Central to this exhibition is my conviction that the spiritual can find expression through the material world, and that art can awaken our capacity to perceive beyond what is immediately visible.

I hope the work might offer moments of beauty, wonder and peace. These paintings are not answers. They are part of an ongoing journey, and an invitation to discover something for yourself.

At the heart of my work is the belief that art can do more than communicate an idea.

It can move the soul.

I am an internationally exhibited British artist, author and curator whose career spans more than three decades and over 100 exhibitions, from the Venice Biennale to the House of Commons. A registered art psychotherapist, I founded Zero2 Expo, an art and science initiative for child health evaluated in The Lancet. My books include the bestselling Irresistible Birth and the literary novella Mad Enough to Love You: Desire. Based between Bali and the UK, I explore through painting, writing and advocacy how art can awaken awareness and change lives, where creativity, health and human experience meet.

Author and Storyteller

My writing extends many of these same enquiries into another medium.

I am the author of The Art of Birth and Irresistible Birth, and a contributing author to Womb to Thrive. My writing on birth and women’s innate body wisdom developed alongside many years of research, teaching and advocacy surrounding pregnancy, birth and early human development.

My work has appeared in The Lancet, Health Expectations, Juno Magazine, The Mother Magazine and international anthologies.

In 2025, I published Mad Enough to Love You: Desire, a departure into literary fiction and an exploration of longing, sexuality, love and awakening set in Bali.

Across these very different genres, I find myself returning to a surprisingly similar question:

What happens when we become more fully ourselves?

Art, Healing and Social Change

In 2016, I founded Zero2 Expo and created the Birthing a Better Future Art and Science Exhibition at the UK Houses of Parliament.

The project subsequently travelled to venues including Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital and The Fitzrovia Chapel, bringing artists, scientists, health professionals and the public together around the importance of the first 1001 days of human life.

My evaluation of the exhibition was published in The Lancet, exploring the potential of art to influence understanding, empathy and engagement with complex health and social issues.

I have continued to collaborate with researchers and academics, including Professor Monica Lakhanpaul at UCL, exploring the territory where creativity, science and human experience meet.

Creativity and Healing

As a trained Art Psychotherapist, I have worked within clinical and community settings, including neurorehabilitation, as well as facilitating workshops exploring creativity, embodiment and personal transformation.

These experiences continue to inform my understanding of creativity, but I don’t see art simply as therapy.

Creating is, in itself, a fundamental human act.

Painting can reach somewhere language cannot. A story can allow us to recognise something about ourselves. An image can stir a feeling before we understand why.

Across everything I create, these different strands ultimately return to the same enquiry:

How do we meet life, how are we transformed by it, and how might creativity help us encounter something deeper within ourselves.
